Rem: Mohawk 243 cal. and barnes bullet?

Well I just loaded some 85 Gr. Barnes TSX with IMR 4064
I wonder how this pill medicine will work on Whitetails
My FPS is running 3150 the bullet will print 3 shots at the 100 yd. target in around a dime size group
I also have some Remington 100 Gr. core lock in around 3000 FPS
I wonder which is the better bullet
I am recovering from a tore rotator cuff repair that is 9 months old so I have to baby the shoulder

Both should be fine whitetail medicine.

Re: Rem: Mohawk 243 cal. and barnes bullet?

I shoot these 85 gr, Barnes pills out of 243 WSSM w/ 43.0 grains of 4007SSC & Fed, 210 match primers...

Quite the load for whitetails....I shot an 8 point last year at 80 yards and he went one direction...DOWN !! He was DRT....

His chest cavity looked like a grenade went off in it.

Good luck with either load....

Re: Rem: Mohawk 243 cal. and barnes bullet?

Bout made me spit my drink all over the computer screen seeing the words "Remington Mohawk 243"....You dont hear many people who have one and even less who have heard of them, atleast around here. My dad has a remington mohawk 243 and I have yet to meet another person with one, I know one day that gun will be mine.....but I am fine with that taking a LONG time as I know I can use it anytime. Its always funny to see him pull that gun out at the range and people always think its gonna have to be innacurate since with that 18.5" barrel, but as you said dime sized 3 shot groups are what my dad gets to with remington 100gr. corelokts and his mohawk, I know with that combo he has never lost a deer and only 2 have taken a step with every shot being behind the shoulder. No one will ever convince me there is a whitetail to big for the .243 to take down with 1 shot through the slats, but I will be glad to come and shoot a big boy anyone has to be sure lol

If you ever decide to sell the Mohawk I will gladly give it a very loving home and a brother to set by in the gun cabinet, but I am sure you have a few takers already lined up.....pm forthcoming with my email/phone numbers as I am not joking!

That 85 grain Barnes will put any whitetail down if you do your part. That's a great load you have going there. Good luck!

I've always had great 100 yard groups with 41gr of IMR 4350 behind a 100gr Sierra Gameking and second place groups with 95gr Nosler Partitions. I hope I see how it works on deer at least once!

Bought a Mohawk 243 in 1975 for $99.99 and it's still one of the best factory shooting guns i own.

Re: Rem: Mohawk 243 cal. and barnes bullet?

Well I will say the bullet speaks for it self ,I took a large doe on Saturday about 130 yard plus shot she was traveling threw some heavy thickets but did stop in a small open spot took aim must of pulled the shot a little to the left.
The bullet entered a little behind the left front shoulder and went threw the center of the deer and stopping in the rear right back leg complete mushroom and weight 84 grains chest cavity full of blood blew out both lungs.
