Win. Model 70 help

Ok all, I need your expertise, I just got a Winchester model 70 30/06 with a boss. First question is what is the purpose of the boss? It has numbers like its adjustable? This is the pre 64 sporter, anybody have this? What kind of accuracy can I expect? For those of you that have this gun what are some of your favorite deer rounds? I'm no hand loader so I will feed it factory rounds. This was my father inlaws gun and it never seen the deer woods. He passed away in March and left this to me. I will carrying this on opening day in his honor.

Re: Win. Model 70 help

The BOSS was supposed to help with accuracy; barrel harmonics, etc.

Never owned one, never knew anyone that owned one either.

I believe you would adjust the BOSS in order to find the sweet spot of the rifle. I think there should be some documentation with the rifle telling you what the average setting would be for that rifle. You then adjust from there. If there is no documentation, you might have to contact Winchester.

Re: Win. Model 70 help

The Boss was a failed concept. It was supposed to help you
"dial in" the "Sweet Spot" of your favorite ammo so that your gun shot the nads off of gnats. In some rifles, it could improve groups with careful load development, but mostly it was hype. The single biggest detractor is....Its uglier than an old spinster ! Look at all the above info to see how it works, its good information. Alot of them were removed and the barrel lopped and recrowned. In reality, they do no harm, but they don't do much else.

The BOSS was designed to make it louder.

If in fact this was the intended purpose it worked fine. They are loud.

Re: Win. Model 70 help

My experience with model 70 s has always been find reasonable weight bullet for your cartridge and keep the barrel clean and 3/4 inch groups was nevrt a issue. Corperate takeover of browning whrte pretty guns sold for a premium they tried the boss there first because the japenese factory where they were built liked gadgets. Lol there came the boss

Re: Win. Model 70 help

I have this gun and can shot tacks all day long. I shoot a 180 grain bullet. When I purchase this gun the Boss was a recoil reducer and accuracy helper. If you tell me what grain bullet you shoot I can look at my book to tell you the approx sweet spot. As for being loud make sure you you don't shoot this in a confine space or beside a building the noise reflection will do damage to another ears.

Re: Win. Model 70 help

du1096 I am thinking about nosler partitions in 150 or 165 grain. Thanks for the help.
