22 question

Hello all. I am mentoring with big bro. The kid is really into the outdoors. Even went through his hunter safety course. I want to get him a little gift. I never went small game myself yet but with small game coming in I would like to get him a 22. I am on a tight budget though so what is the best/economical one to get? Thanks for any help.

Re: 22 question

Single shot Rossi is a fairly inexpensive rifle, or an NEF/H&R if one can be found?

One of my farmboy cousin's grandsons has a Rossi combo single shot and the little devil loves to peck away with that 22.

For a bit more money, Marlin or Savage bolt action repeater works well.

Re: 22 question

My first 22 was a marlin 25 bolt.action...accurate and works well...trigger is stiff...but, safety wise with a youth that might.not be a bad thing...accuracy wise it can hurt...but, i learned to shoot it fine...

Its magazine fed which i personally like...imo its easier and safer to load/unload etc...

Squirrel hunting with a 22 is a blast and great way to get into hunting...usually enough action to keep a kid happy and can always slowly walk around and a great way to scout for deer etc too...

Re: 22 question

I just saw a picture of a kids Savage in magazine the other day; no price given, but looked like a neat starter rifle.
Wish PA would allow Ruger 10-22 for squirrel hunting.

I've had one for some time, but I think the source might've dried up on those by now? Great little rifles for the money, at the time and pretty accurate. Scoped, mine will do 1/2" groups @ 50 yards with ammo it likes.

Our club has about a dozen of 'em for youth field days, WITO events, etc. While most were a bit rough, one of our NRA instructors found one at a gunshow about 8 or 10 years ago, that was in "unissued" condition. Absolutely brand spankin' new. Tried to pry it away from her, no dice.

Re: 22 question

I think a cheap shotgun would be a better option.Easier to hit squirrels and he can use it for rabbit, grouse or pheasants. You can probably get a Savage 22 for around $210.I bought a 17 HMR for that at Dunhams.
