Marlin 27s 25-20

Anyone have one of these or reload for the 25-20?

Re: Marlin 27s 25-20

I had a 25-20 Stevens model 44 single shot, years ago. Even with a crappy bore, it shot 2 inch groups at 100 yds, with black powder loads. I foolishly swapped it and the reloading gear off for some frivolous gun. I am not sure, but I may have an old Ballard in 25-20. It is one of those winter projects I purchased 30 years ago and never did anything with it. The bore is dark. I intended to have it relined.

There were three rather popular small 25 caliber centerfire cartridges a century ago. the first was the 25-21 Stevens a narrow straight wall case. Then there was the 25-20 single shot. A slightly shorter and only slightly bottle necked case and then the 25-20 Winchester centerfire. an even shorter more bottle necked case. The first two were almost entirely used in single shot rifles. The 25 Win CF was developed for lever guns and was even used in several revolvers.

I have a 25-20 WCF in a Savage Sporter bolt action. It is a sweet little gun. Very accurate. I have not reloaded yet but finding manufactured ammo is hard and expensive.

Re: Marlin 27s 25-20

I did check at Cabellas and no reloading stuff for the 25-20.Ammo was $63/box.
Got 100 rounds of brass,200 Hornady 60 FP,and dies at a local shop.Price was less than the 2 boxes of ammo.

Re: Marlin 27s 25-20

I used to have a Marlin 1894 in .25-20. I sold it before I ever saw the 75 grain Speer bullet but I've often wished I had it back so I could try that bullet. The 86 grain is too heavy and you can't get good velocity.
