Rifle for a new hunter

Hey all, this thread isnt realy about me, but my cousin, who is the same age as me (22 years old) and just started to get interested in hunting. I've taken him out shooting a few times and he has done fine shooting my Rem Game master 270. He is interested in getting himself his own rifle, so I wanted to ask on here what some of you guys think about the new models of rifles that are fairly affordable. I havent really done any research yet, and don't know too much about any other rifles besides my 'ol faithful, so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think Savage makes a great "affordable" rifle.

for the money , i dont think you can go wrong with the new weatherby vanguard 2 series, well built, shoots great, many different calibers to chooe,if money is real tight, a savage axis, could be a choice, for a beat up gun prob wouldent be a bad choice, that way if he really gets into hunting he can save up for a rem 700, ruger, weatherby mark 5,

Re: Rifle for a new hunter

I love my .270 rem.it is very accurate rifle. If price is a problem you can get a savage also good out of the box. Do a little research and your cousin will be fine. If he is going to hunt predators try.243 I just bought one in savage preadator can hunt deer or predators and no recoil.Ibought it if my wife or daughter decides togo too! Right!

I like the idea of the Savage or the Vanguard.

Hunting: 10% skill and 90% location.

I have 2 Marlins, one in .06 and other .270. Affordable accurate and nice. Also just picked up a new Axis in .223 but have not fired it yet.

Re: Rifle for a new hunter

A lot depends on where you'll be hunting mostly and how.

Will he be sitting or walking? Is it open ground, hilly, or heavily wooded? Will he use it for bear also?

Well, sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, well, he eats you, so the Dude must abide!

whatever brand of rifle you pick ,stay with a STANDARD and COMMON caliber 270 Win. is a great choice,, ammo is cheap and you can find it everywhere that sells ammo

Re: Rifle for a new hunter

I agree .243, .270, or 30-06 are good, easily attainable, and reliable choices for just about anything in PA.
