Why?

I bought a new rifle this past winter and have been trying to get it to shoot by trying different loads, using Nosler bullets which have always worked well for me in the past.

I started with a load I got from Hart Custom Rifles. Nothing seemed to work. I tried different weights, different powders, etc.

I had a box of Barnes TTSX's on hand which I tried. I got a load from the Barnes website and it worked great. I got a 1" group Saturday from 200 yards.

I have heard of this happening and that guns don't like certain loads. This is the first time I have experienced anything this dramatic.

WHY would a different bullet make this much difference?

Re: Why?

some rifles are just finicky. I had one that would shoot winchester factory powerpoints very well. but nothing else. I tried 10 differant handloads in it and none of them did better the 2.5 inch at 100yds. I have a 25-06 that shoots any 100gr around 1 inch groups. but use sierra 100gr boatails and they tighten to just over a half inch.

Re: Why?

Tis the nature of the beasts. Different guns like different things. 2 nephews had Model 94's, 1 shot 150 gr well and other only liked the 170 gr.

Re: Why?

Flat base vs boat tail can make the biggest difference in the world. I have many rifles that liked either one or the other. Shoot 2" groups with one, shoot 1/2" with the other.

Re: Why?

If you got a 1 inch group at 200 from a factory rifle consider yourself blessed.

Re: Why?

I did have it "accurized" by Hart. Barrel and rings lapped, action trued, re-crowned and trigger adjusted. Had it done when rifle was brand new. Only have about 60 rounds through it at this point.

Thanks guys for the input.

Re: Why?

.300 Win Mag.

73 grains of IMR 4831. 165 gr. Barnes TTSX. Could not believe the difference this tip made. I was getting concerned that I had a "lemon."

Going to Wyoming Oct. 11 for Mule Deer and Antelope.
