Good scope for .300 win mag

Hi everyone, This question is to help a friend out. He was given a Sako .300 win mag in payment for some contracting work and for starters the rifle did not comewith the scope rings, are Sako rings the only rings you would use ? Second question is, what scope would you reccomend ? The rifle will possibly be used to go for elk out west. Thank you for any help on this.

Happiness is a good blood trail!!!

I would opt for the best 3-9 or 2-10 scope I could afford.

3x9x40 anything bigger is just extra weight for elk hunting. leupold, burris, redfield, bushnell elite. something of good and known quality.

4.5x14 or 6.5x20 I elk hunt Co. and never been any closer than 400 yards from elk. Optics are very important i actually use nightforce 5.5x22 x50 on my elk rifles.

A good old 3x9 leupold will be fine.

Leupold 2.5-8x or 3-9. Keep the weight down for hunting out west. I have shot elk at past 300 yards...they are HUGE animals. I have killed them without ever having to have my scope up higher than 4x. The longest one at over 300 I shot with my scope all the way down at 2.5 power. All on self guided public land hunts in Colorado

Get a quality 3 x 9 or a 4 x 12. I had a Weaver 4 x 12 on my .300 for over 25 years. It now has a Leupold VXIII riding it.

Re: Good scope for .300 win mag

I wouldnt swap a few ounces of weight vs. little extra magnification. Also a 50 mm lens helps gather little more light.
