The Whelen Carbine... Completed

Some of you may recall this rifle I bought several months back. Started tinkering with this new bear rifle about 2 months ago, and finally finished this evening.

Put the synthetic stock on it and a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36mm.

Been testing loads in it for nearly 2 months now, and finally settled on this load. It shoots alot better than I thought it would. I had good accuracy right from the beginning with this combo, and just kept tweaking. Most would have settled on a load long before I did, but things just kept tightening up.

I'll check zero one last time before bear season. I can't wait to carry this thing. It's light, accurate, and very fast handling.

The Holy Grail... the Remington Model 7600 Carbine 35 Whelen

Enjoy

Not too shabby Tony, any scope rash? I got a pretty good case of it when I was doing load development for my Whelen.
Still have a scar on the bridge of my nose

Alrighty then!

Re: The Whelen Carbine... Completed

It came close a few times. I did load development with a 6-18x40mm on it, and never touched my face with that.

Today, once I put the hunting scope back on it and was getting it dialed in, it touched my nose twice. Not hard, just a bump. However, I have the screw in lens cap on the rear, so once I removed that, I had an extra 1/4" or so of clearance, just enough that it stopped touching when I fired.

I have the scope as far forward as possible that I still get full focus when cranked up to 8...

Those VX3's got some good eye relief, I'll tell ya.

It's got alot of recoil... it's what I would call "unpleasant" to shoot

I'm not recoil shy though, but will admit when something boots

I hear ya. I shoot 250's thru mine. It hurts, I'm 6'5" 295lbs and I get just a little antsy when I shoot off the bench. Hunting is different ...

Alrighty then!

Looks like its gonna be a shooter for ya !!!

Have you chrono'ed your load ? Wondered how fast a Whelen would toss a 225. I'm guessing 2500-ish from the carbine.
