Making a custom-fit hardcase

I recently hit on a gun ticket and wound up with a rather nice gun. I tend to lean towards working-men's guns, so having something this nice laying around is kind of foreign to me.

In an effort to keep it nice for a good, long time, I'd like to make a nice wooden hard case for it with a custom-fit foam and felt interior, or something to the like.

Have any of y'all done this before? I have a few ideas and can research more, but before I go knee-deep into a new project, I'd like to hear from someone that's done it before.

Any thoughts or references would be greatly appreciated... thanks!
