300 Win Mag ?

I love my 270 pump but i have been really getting into bear hunting, and going after elk in 2013. I know my 270 will work for both but thinking about a 300, looks like the 180 gr would be great for bear, and elk, and 150 for deer. Anyone got some experience with the 300? Thanks

Re: 300 Win Mag ?

i love my 300! its a savage model 111 in 300 win mag and has been to colorado and back 2 times and has done the trick on elk and mule deer and lots of whitetails here in pa! your 270 is a plenty capable caliber for elk and bear but if your looking for some "extra insurance knock down power" the 300 is a great caliber! its all about shot placement on the whitetails...just stay off the shoulder a little bit and you will have minimal meat loss!

I use a .300 win mag for deer and love it. Head, neck, vitals . . . minimal meat loss. 150 grains pattern like a a charm.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people asking questions.

The .270 Winchester is one of my preferred rounds for things such as Elk or Bear. I spend time over on the 24hourcampfire and they not so politely scoff at anyone who can't cleanly take an Elk with a .270. The one guy over there has three friends who have taken Grizzlies with a .270. I want to start using the .270 for moose hunting myself.

I've got both .270 and .300 RUM and would hate to have to pick just one.....later

There's some very knowledgeable folk over at 24. There's also some absolute rum-dums. I will let the general populace here at HPA decide for themselves which group of folk it is that hunt grizzly with .270's.

As for the O.P. ............. I have two .300 Win Mags and load for three more. The .300 Win just excels with 180 gr. bullets. IMHO, the 150's can be a bit light for deer if shots are close-in as they can tend to be in PA. I've seen some pretty impressive cato's from 150 grainers hitting whitetails at close range. The deer is dead.......yes. But the bullet has gone to complete pot. 150's had better be very well constructed or, better yet, mono-metal. I have found a load with IMR-4350 and 180 gr. Speer Grand Slams that shoots well in every rifle I load for. I use the same load for whatever. No deer load, bear load, elk load or whatever. The one recipe does everything exceptionally well. The 180 gr.SGS also holds together very well on close-in shots.

Get you a .300 Winny and enjoy the heck out of it.

Re: 300 Win Mag ?

Hosea Sarber killed more Grizzlies and Browns than anyone did. His guns were a .270 winchester and a .30-06 Springfield. Magnum guys just can't understand that though. They must wonder how the big stuff was killed before mangle-ums came out.

Re: 300 Win Mag ?

I used to know an old Algonquin in Quebec that shot all his moose with a .25 rimfire.

I guess if we'd put him over on 24, he'd be the hero of the century. Too bad he's passed on.
