squirrel gun gunshow find

found a really nice remington 581 at the show today. it is a first year gun with the nice original walnut stock and nice bluing. looks hardly fired. a nice bonus is it came with a nice vintage 3/4" tube redfield 4x scope. really clear and fits the gun nice. i did a little research on the scope and found that it is worth a few bucks too so i was happy. whole package was $250 OTD. my son was psyched because he has his own squirrel gun now and doesn't have to share our rem 582 with his brother anymore. hopefully it shoots as good as it looks. if its like the 582, it won't disappoint.

Cool. One of those is on my short list of guns I need to get. It reminds me of my first deer rifle, my Rem Mod 788. I have a friend who collects those. He's got several.

I don't have ducks. I don't have rows. I have squirrels. And they're drunk.

yep. my short list includes a 788 carbine 243. it is a perfect compliment to the 58x guns. i'm a big believer in having a 22 that matches your deer gun. some good examples

ruger 77/22 & 77
marlin 39 & 336
rem 121 or 572 & 760

My 788 is a .243 carbine. I got it when I was 12. Wee Man will carry it when he gets old enough.

I never saw a Rem 581 with a REAL walnut stock. Walnut finished hardwood yes. Most were birch. The same can be said of the Rem 788.

Early 581's had walnut stocks. There's even talk that some were mahogany. Two walnut stocked 581's are in our family.
