If they could only talk....

I got a chance today to dissassemble and go over a 98 Mauser I picked up not long ago. I can't help but wonder about how much literal killing it has done. Its a 1906 Danzig, so it saw service in WW1. Probably killed French boys, British boys, our doughboys, etc. It had an arsenal rebarrel in 1939 by the third reich, and saw service in WW2. Again, most likely killed allied troops. There are no import marks, so I am assuming some GI sent it home. It is in a 1960's Fajen rollover stock, and undoubtedly has been hunting deer and bear in Pa since then. In service for 106 years, and still in top shape, ready to go to war or the woods. How many products made today can hold a candle to that?

possibly never fired a shot in anger too. look at the rifles in boot camp, worn out but never seen a battlefield.

It may be a poor choice of words but I am smart enough to understand what you meant.

Re: If they could only talk....

Very true, but I hope its taken alot of bucks here in Pa in the last 40 years! Not sure how I am going to build it yet, but it will be back in service next year in the deer woods.
( My Uncle told me about the worn out 1911's in boot camp, never seen action but dilapidated from training. He said the drill Sarge had a big fat pencil the same diameter as a .45, and if the old relic would not shoot a passing score he would place some pencil holes in the target so the man qualified. )

I love old guns, and I think its their past that attracts me to them. I've bought alot from their original elderly owners. The stories that come with them are often worth the price of the gun.

I get the same feeling when I handle an old Remington
Rolling Block rifle or anything similar.
