Help needed from Savage 99 gurus

I just picked up a Savage 99-been wanting one for a while. I am not sure exactly what I have in terms of model variant and date of manufacture. I'll tell you I know:

.308 caliber
22" barrel
brass counter
round forearm (not schnabel), steel buttpad
Chicopee Falls marked
Letter boss code looks like 11L, to the best of ability to read it.
Serial number-1,002,xxx.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Will

Re: Help needed from Savage 99 gurus

Most of what I know is directly from Doug Murray's book, The Savage 99. Anyone with any interest should make it a point to buy his book. Unfortunately I don't have it in front of me at this time to compare features on the 1960 models ( your lever code designates 1960 mfg date). 1960 was also the last year at Chicopee Falls if i remember correctly.

I will dig deeper for you if I am able to locate my book but something tells me my Dad has it

By the way congrats on a fine rifle!!!

Thanks BONZy. I'll probably pick up that book. I've had the itch for a 99 for several years. Looked at several today at a gunshow, and this seemed to be the best value.

I'm looking at Murry's book, but can't find a reference to a Mod 11L or L. The only thing I could find with a "L" reference is the MOD "DL".

There is a notation "Most DLs are marked "99-M either the frame right of left side or barrel right side The Model 99-M was never seen advertised in any catalogs".

Does your 99 have a monte carlo stock and a tang safety? According to murrays book this would be the model dl.

Bill,

The lever boss code "L" designates year of manufacture. If you have the book handy you should be able to narrow the model down by the features he gave us. I'm betting it's an F ??

There's another fella here, Romac, that is very knowledgeable on 99's

Re: Help needed from Savage 99 gurus

I'm still having regrets on not picking up a project 99 I saw at the gunshow yesterday at the Washington fairgrounds.

It was a pre-mil barreled action in 300 savage. Had obviously been reblued but the guy only wanted $250 for it and would have probably gone lower. Add a Boyd's stock and it would have been a "hunter" 99

There were quite a few 99's there and a few at good prices and several way overpriced but I blew my budget on a Remington 572 BDL

I made a handsome offer on two 99s last week, one in 303 the other 30-30. His wife said "SOLD", but he wanted to think on it a week or so. I going to wait awhile then waive the cash and see if that ends his think'n!

The only one I have now is a well used 1906 "B".

Re: Help needed from Savage 99 gurus

Thanks for the help, It does not have a Monte Carlo stock, but has a tang safety. I just mounted a Vari-X III 2.5-8 Leupold on it and loaded 20 rounds of ammo, but I'll probably wait to shoot it until next weekend-a little too cold and windy.

I think it probably a F-seems very light-not much heavier than the Remington Model 7 I pulled the scope off from to put on the Savage.
