Im looking at the Ruger M77 in a 257 Roberts or the Savage Model 16 Weather Warrior in a 260 Rem. I will only be shooting factory pills but getting them is not hard online. I have a 243 and a 30-06 is it really worth getting the roberts other than being able to shoot 120's out of it. I mean Im trying to justify getting the bob but id like to hear someone else tell me why its better than the 243 and no significant difference between it and the 260 just to persuade me even more. No seriously though I would like you guys thoughts especially anyone using these calibers. Thanks!
In reality,as you have stated, the only advantage in using the Roberts is you can use a heavier Bullet. I have a .243 and and a Roberts. The 100 grainers work very well on Deer. In the Roberts I use the 117 Grain Winchester +P ammo for Bear. Don`t know if they work `cause I haven`t got a shot at one!! If you have a .243 and an 06 sounds like the bases are covered. but, a Ruger 77 sounds like a must have option1111
I have a 260 and absolutely love it. Everything I shoot with it falls on the spot. I will say from a factory load standpoint do not shoot the 140 core lokts out of the 260. I shot a doe in the spine one year I pulled the bullet out of the hind quarter..yes you heard that right..and it had not expanded at all. I went to the Federal shells with 120 grain nosler partitions. a few bucks more but the deer just ball up when hit.
killed my first buck in 83 with a M77 in .257 roberts, sold it when I was 18 as I always thought it was underpowered. I realized now that it's not. Gotta love the M77 though, I have one now in 7mm mag. 257 vs 260? get the 257.
The biggest advantage the .260 has over the .257 is a better selection of bullet weights. The .25 calibers are hampered by a maximum available bullet weight of 120 grains. If they would start producing heavier weights (130-140gr) then the .25's would really shine.
