.270 ballistic question

I went to range this morning for some more shooting of my .270. The 100 yard range was reserved for the police/prison guards so I had to shoot at 75 yard range. I am shooting federal premium nosler ballistic tips in 130 grain. I have a very nice tight group 2 inches high at 75 yards. My question is at 100 yards what will the drop be?Thanks for any feedback.

Re: .270 ballistic question

There won't be any drop of consequence. You will still have a point of impact that is above your point of aim.

Would have to get into the specifics of the bullet, velocity, etc to know specifics, but you'll probably be between 1.5" and 2.5" high at 100 yards.

Again, depending on the bullet's BC and the initial velocity, you're looking at somewhere between a 200 and roughly 230 yard zero with a drop at 300 of about 8", give or take.

Re: .270 ballistic question

Can't be answered exactly as you need to know the height of center of the scope above the center of the bore (determines the upward angle of bullet flight across the line of sight). But guessing it is around 1.5" and guessing a velocity of about 3000fps. It is still rising at 100 to about +2.5".

3 high at 150, 2 high at 200, 0 again at 250

Re: .270 ballistic question

Yep Using a Winchester ballistics calculator for 130 grain .270 Win it would put you @ 2.5" high at 100 / 3" high at 150 / 2" high at 200 / dead on at about 250

Temperature and scope height not withstanding

Well, sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, well, he eats you, so the Dude must abide!

Re: .270 ballistic question

Thanks for that feedback! Would you all be
satisfied with my range results for use on a Pa deer hunt? I'm thinking I will be in great shape! May try at 100 yards tomorrow or friday. Thanks again.

Re: .270 ballistic question

I'm of the opinion that a 250 yd zero is just about right for the 270 and that should be pretty close to where you are. Checking at 200 yds will tell you more now than going to 100. If you're still 2 to 2.5 inches high at 200 yds, I would say you're in excellent shape.

Re: .270 ballistic question

I'd give it a try at 100 yds then, but you should be fine.

Re: .270 ballistic question

I personally would like it .5 to 1 inch(es) high at 100 yards.

I shoot the exact same bullet and it works for me. Would rather have it tight to the line of that first 100, than worrying about the drop at 250.

I hunt in typical PA deer woods. If you hunt fields, then 2" high at 100.
