Ohh my god rust on my guns!

I'm pretty meticulous with my firearms. I clean them after every outing, wipe them down after handling them, keep them in secure locations, ensure there is a dehumidifier rod and desiccant packs/cans in the locations with the firearms. I also keep firearms on all three levels of my home. I've NEVER had rust, EVER.

I was in my basement this past weekend getting some ammo out for deer season when I noticed 3 of the 4 guns in the basement had a bit of rust on them, nothing serious and it wiped right off with a little gun oil. I made sure to oil them back up and placed them back in their spots. (Basement is finished)

All weekend it's been bothering me. These guns have been here for over a year, no rust. We run a room dehumidifier in the room as well to keep it regulated, it's on the same setting it's always been on. Then it struck me, my wife and I started showering in the basement bathroom each morning as to not wake our baby. The showering must have created extra moisture in the room.

Solution: turn the dehumidifier level up, I've also made a note in a month to check on these guns again and will do so to monitor their appearance.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else runs in to this situation. It was really bothering me!

Don't Tread On Me is what it says and I'll take that to my grave.

How close is the shower to where your guns are stored? How about laundering? Is their any more of that goin on.How are your guns stored?Mine are in my safe with a dehumidifier stick. Some extras are in cases with no problems. My b/ment is in a old f/house and isn,t finished but very functional.Have your guns gone thru any temp swings lately from cold to warm for example that could have induced sweating?

Re: Ohh my god rust on my guns!

i had problems when i used one of those metal gun cabinets in my basement. i bought a "real" firesafe & one of those dehumidifer rods and have had no problems since. if you can't afford a safe at this point, might want to look into those silicon storage bags.

Straight across the room, 10 feet. My guns (in the basement) are in a locked closet under the steps. As I mentioned there is a dehumidifier rod and packs in the closet with the guns. Also, as I mentioned they have been there for over a year with no issues.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I believe I have it figured out (the humidity and moisture from the shower). And by cranking up the large dehumidifier unit in the room itself we should be set. Just never gave it a thought that by us starting to utilize the shower downstairs my guns would start to rust, I should have, but didn't.

Glad I caught it when I did, very very small spots that wiped right off!

Re: Ohh my god rust on my guns!

Is there a exhaust fan down there?????????? If not, install one to pull the extra moisture outside... instead of relying on the dehumidifier.

There is. The rust was a small spot or two on each barrel. Wiped right off, I assume by turning up the level on the dehumidifier we should be all set now. I didn't take into account the added moisture in the air by showering down there.

A little surface rust doesn't hurt anything. Wipes right off. It's when you neglect the arms for months that it does the damage.
