model 99 300 savage

my mother inlaw gave me my fil 300 savage model 99 nice gun he gotm it from his uncle brand new in the 50s spent alot of good times hunting with him and it is a privilage to now own this gun i want to shoot a deer with it this year . i use only factory loads and like federals . what grain bullet should i sight it with . ill be using open sight in thicker stuff 75 yards would be about max . so tell me what grain bullet you giuys use and why thanks jerry

You will most likely have to try different loads to see which are acceptable and which ones are lousy

I have my Father's 99 now. 300sav. It' s been shot
With since 1958 with factory Remington and Winchester rounds in
150 gr. Round nose. been told to use round nose why back
They seem to feed better with internal rotary mag.

my brothers 300 99 likes the remington 150 grain. that would be my choice.

My diploma is a DD Form 214

thanks im thinkin the same he has a few boxes of rem 150 in core lok so ill clean it and shoot it to see if it is still on im hopin to get something with it he only got one deer in all his years of hunting and it was the one and only year i talked him into hunting with me so it is a special gun to me sadly he has been gone since 1993

Coldcreek. They are fine shooting guns old school craftmanship.
My Dads 99 has a Lyman peep sight. I kept it the same
Way as he hunted with it. I take it hunting time to time. Like you
I have fond memories with my Dad hunting. His 99 300 sav. Lives on.

who ever moved this post thankyou i ment to put it here lol anyhow i could only find 150g remington and that is what he used so i think it should be pretty close when i shoot it thanksgiving im using it for thick stuff because of the open sights and walking trails and such. thanks for all the input

only rifle I use...180 rem soft core lokt does great only bullet I ever shot out of it...had it for 34 yrs

I have had great success with the 150 grain core lokts with mine. I did shoot some 150 grain Win. silver tips out of it before with great performance as well but they are almost impossible to find now.

When I had my .300sav. mod.99 (tear) I shot Winchester silver tips 150 gr. Always dropped deer great. Miss her....later
