Re: 7mm08

I reload either 120,or 140grain bullets, for mine. Usually Sierras, or Nosler ballistic tips. More than adequate for deer, in my opinion.

Re: 7mm08

well i know there is no reason to worry about not having enough gun for deer being that its alot more powerfull than many popular deer guns

Re: 7mm08

While I mainly handload for my 08s, I find a lot of 7mm-08s like Winchester loads. Good thing about this round is that its accurate with a lot of different brands of factory ammo. Handloads are usually 140 grain Balistic CTs or 120-140 grain Barnes tripleshocks. I wouldn't hesittate to take deer to elk with the latter load. As far as being more powerfull than a lot of other deer rounds?...the 7mm-08 in nothing more than a necked down .308 Win. It'll do almost everything the .308 will do with less recoil and a lot more than the .243 can do with only a llittle more recoil. Along with the .260, id put it in the category as one of the 3 best deer rounds ever made.

Re: 7mm08

I load 120 ballistic tips for mine and my dads. Been working great for years.

Re: 7mm08

I've been following my father's load development for his 7-08. He has shot 140's...Sierra ProHunters did a good job on a couple deer, and then this year he switched to Nosler Ballistic Tips (140's). Shot a buck at 226 yards, great expansion, single exit wound of about the size of a quarter.

Then he shot a tiny doe at 140 yards and it fractured the bullet.

Neither he nor I am a fan of that performance. Some like it, we don't.

He may go back to the ProHunters, or I suggested he try a Nosler Partition in the off-season and see how it shoots.

Really neat round....looking forward to my girls talking their grandpa out of his 7-08 to let them hunt with it.

Re: 7mm08

I used to just use Remington 140 Core-Lokts. They work.

Re: 7mm08

I have loaded the Swift Scirocco 150 gr bullet with great performance. In commercial ammo, I favor the Federal Fusion 140 gr loading

Re: 7mm08

I had good results from the Winchester 140 grain Powerpoints both from an accuracy standpoint and on a doe I shot last year. Switching to the Hornady 139 grain SSTs this year. Hopefully I can let ya know how they perform on game!
