Checkering a laminate stock?

Is it possible to checker a laminate stock? I love my savage 111 with thumbhole stock. What I dont like is the grip under the barrel. There is no 'bite.' Pulling it to my should tonsteady my hand skips with any kind of gloves except the gloves that have the little rubber dots on them. That being said, its normally cold and those thin gloves dont do much. I 2as thinking if I could get the whole bottom part and sides checkered it would make a vast difference? Thoughts?

As long as I know it can be, I can shop around for someone. After Saturday, there will be plenty if months where someone can work on it. I also dont want a hack job either. Unfortunately, special skills going by the wayside these days.
