The US Store, Kinko's-FedEx, Staples, etc will charge you a king's ransom for the box.

I generally put the gun in a cheap, plastic gun case then get a furniture or appliance box from somewhere and make my own cardboard box to fit the case in. I usually tape bubble wrap around the case before I box it in. UPS doesn't make a habit of intentionally mis-handling packages. But the mechanical damages from moving that many packages that fast can be brutal when they happen. ALWAYS overpack for the worst case scenario.

I make my own from 1x material around the perimeter and 1/4" plywood screwed to the perimeter filled with the plastic shipping air bags.

as one of the posts said, check with a gun shop and see if they have a rifle box they wont need. it will already have the packing inside as it will be a gun box. one thing you dont want to do is wrap the box with any type of paper as it could rip off and the shipping label will be lost. use a self sticking label and attach it right on the box. had this happen once and learned not to do it again.
