I never heard "Gee I had too many bullets".......Pick a caliber that can do the intended job, and enough capacity to get it done.

FYI: No charges were brought against him.
I don't think this experience was unfortunate...well, I guess it was for the bad guy. The takeaway here is, even a 9mm can be an effective defense weapon if you put enough of the shots into the bad guy. Your friend did the right thing by continuing to put rounds into the guy.

Thanks guys for your info., we all have what works best for our own self defense. I like to get some different opinions because I don't know it all and this is one of the best places to get important information about handguns and such. A high capacity mag. in 9mm will cover me and my family well enough in my house.

Kudos on finding a good fit for you and your situation.
BTW, the Ruger is a good pistol, you won't have any buyer's remorse.
They run like a top and are plenty accurate.

I can back you up on this. This prison I work as been carrying these P89 9mmDAO for the last 20 something years. They held up well, and shoot. Other then linkages breaking on the range, and magazines falling apart, they do work. The trigger stinks, and some people just can't handle it to shoot well. As a instructor, I am glad they are transitioning to a SW MP 2.0 9mm. I can already see the scores going up!

For home defense I use a 20ga 18in barrel (handles well) with #4 buckshot. Does penetrate as much as 00 and has less recoil and is still extremely effective.
