How did you get your first deer rifle?

Do you remember how you got your first deer rifle? I do and I still have it. A Marlin 336C 30-30. I was @ 12 and wanted my own gun. So I saved pop bottles for a year to get enough money to buy my gun. I walked roads looking for pop bottles and when I was done I had the back of my dads Chevy Truck loaded full. I will never forget the look at the girls face when I went to cash them in! LOL Takes alot of bottles at 5 cents each to buy a new gun. It cost me 112.00 dollars at SOLS in Aliquippa. I made the guy bring out everyone they had so I could pick the one I wanted. Still have it at home. Don't use it anymore but it is my most cherished gun. I wonder how many kids would get away from thier X-box or what ever it is they are playing to do that today?

Take your kids hunting and you won't have to hunt for your kids..

My first deer rifle was passed from my Pap to my Dad then to me. Winchester model 94, 30-30 if that ol' gun could talk.

Re: How did you get your first deer rifle?

I shot my first deer with a borrowed Winchester 94 30-30. The following summer I put a Winchester Featherweight 270 on lay a way at a local shop and worked my tail off doing odd jobs to pay for it. I passed it on to a deserving young man, but in the back of my mind I wish I would have kept it.

Same here skube... although mine is a Marlin 336C. .30-30 of course. Black Walnut and gold trigger.

Pap bought it in 1948 when they first came out. Handed it down to my Dad in 1963. Pap went back to his Enfield with peep sights.

I retired it back in 2007 on a buck. Hasn't been fired since until it is passed down to my son.

Like you said, if they can only talk.

Re: How did you get your first deer rifle?

i was home on leave from the air force back in 82 and a old farmer drinking buddy of my dads was over the house. he was dying of cancer and he would come over and drink my dads beer and smoke my cigarettes cause his wife gave him heck if he did it at home. we got to talking deer guns and i mentioned that i wanted to buy a pump 270. he said "i have one i'll sell ya". i figured it was the beer talking and didn't think anything of it. a month or so later my dad called me at the base i was stationed at in louisiana and said he had a 270 pump waiting for me. $130 and mint condition. i got a lot of deer with that gun before i retired it about 10 years ago. old george didn't last long after that. i can still see him sitting there, sucking down my marlboros and dads draft Stoneys.

My diploma is a DD Form 214

My Uncle gave me his Savage 99 in .300 Sav. when I was 12. It had a 4 power redfield scope on it. I thought I was the lukiest kid in the deer woods.

Re: How did you get your first deer rifle?

I inherited my father's Winchester Model 670A 30-06 with a Leupold Vari-X I scope.

It was some 20 or so years later that I bought my first and only brand new rifle.

Just can't and probably won't retire the Win 670A. It's too good and accurate of a rifle to just sit around.

Re: How did you get your first deer rifle?

My first deer rifle was an old 303 British carbine that my Grandfather used, and was passed on to me. I still have it but don't shoot it anymore. Killed my first deer with it.

Re: How did you get your first deer rifle?

My dad bought me a Winchester 94.I had a choice of it or a marlin.I was 14 and wanted the cowboy gun.Later in life I lent it to my nephew and it was stolen from him.I no longer will lend a gun to anyone.Because of that anyone that borrows anything from me must provide something of greater value as collateral.
