got a chance to get a new gun!

The wife won a savage 17 hmr that we don't want so she is letting me trade it for a bigger caliber. I currently own a 270 but am looking for something bigger. During deer season I'm shooting about 350-400 yards so I want something with a little more punch out that far than the 270 and I'm also looking for a good bear gun.
I was thinking either the 30 06 or the 300 win mag.
any suggestions?

Re: got a chance to get a new gun!

A little more punch at 350-400 yards than a .270? Why?

You also state that you're looking for a better bear gun than your .270. Once again why?

I'm all for a guy drumming up excuses to get more guns but the .270 is completely adequate for what you're concerned about. You need better reasons. The trouble is the fact that you got a .270 to begin with. It makes it very hard to justify other gun purchases.

For deer you don't need it though. My longest shot was 550 and it was with a 270. Clean kill.

Re: got a chance to get a new gun!

The 270 you already own will do what you're looking to do, as stated in your post. That being said, you could get the 300 win mag if that's what you're leaning towards and have it if you ever hunt elk. If you really want something bigger to hunt elk/bigger bears/moose with, get something along the lines of a .338 win mag. Not that other calibers won't do it, but that's one of the more common ones if you want something above 30 cal. The 06 performance will be comparable in performance to your .270, so I wouldn't personally bother with it.

I think I'm an alright guy, I think I'm alright

Re: got a chance to get a new gun!

I know the 270 would do it but I have a chance to get a new gun and would like something heavier for bear and to have as a back up to the 270 for deer incase something happened to it (like dropping or falling and landing on the gun)

Congrats to you and your wife. I don't blame you for wanting something with a little more 'pop' at the longer distances...and something 'better' for bear.

I've always found the .270 to be just a little light. Great shooter, just a little too 'youth' for my taste.

Given your needs, I'd go with the 7mm caliber.

Have gun, will travel.

The 300 is a great gun and relatively easy to shoot. Not nearly as hard to shoot as many people say and will be more than adequate for everything you desire.
