anyone have a 6.5x284 savage?

i'm kinda thinking i'd like a 6.5x284..or any 6.5 for that matter..i was wondering how the 6.5x284 worked in the 22" barrel savage offers..any real gain over a 260 or swede

I used to use a custom 6.5x.284 for 1000 yard shoots. Beautiful round!! Blows the .260 out of the water imo. As far as factory savage guns, it should be a real killer.

I wish they would offer it in a 24 inch barrel. The savage long range hunter comes with a 26" but it's a little pricey.

My Dad just got one, a 110 Predator Hunter. Shoots nice, still working on loads, but a nice gun. The Pred. Hunter has a 24" bbl.

I don't know why Savage doesn't chamber it in their standard models.

Re: anyone have a 6.5x284 savage?

it seems like it would be a dandy round for deer..in the 270 class which would be pretty hard to beat..i'd just like one because it's something diffrent..i do believe savage makes it in the 116 weather warrior series..but with a 22" barrel. It might cost a little bit of velocity, in a 22" tube but i'll bet a deer would never know the diffrence..

I shot groundhog matches with one built on a Douglas 26" barrel. It was toast at 1,200 rounds. That is typical barrel life for the 6.5-284. In factory rifles, Cooper has it, and possibly others.

Re: anyone have a 6.5x284 savage?

I have a 6.5/06 and two .260's. I love them all. The 6.5/06 has a douglas barrel in 26 inch length. It will flat smoke a deer. I have killed deer in KS (170 class) MO and PA with it never had one take a step. From ranges out to 400 yards. IMO it is twice the caliber a .270 is with allot of reload options. Mine likes 4831 and for hunting I either shoot 100 or 120 grain Nosler BT or 120 Sierra Pro hunters. Both the 6.5/06 and the .260 will flat hammer a deer with these bullets. I can get the 6.5/06 up over 3,000 fps pretty easy. I would say the 6.5/284 would be almost identical to my 6.5/06.

that 6.5 -06 is another classy looking round..do you neck size 25-06 up or 270's down?..if i'm not mistaken you have to make your own brass right?
