Re: 500 S&W lever gun??

hmmm answered my own question...

https://www.bighornarmory.com/products/

$2k is a bit rich for my blood right now...but, the numbers are impressive...

these are from the carbine model...

bullet weight muzzle velocity energy
275 1987 2410
350 2118 3485
440 1872 3423
500 1643 2996
400 1992 3523

*numbers taken from this site...i ran the numbers for the energy online...

http://www.gunblast.com/Bighorn89.htm

interesting....would make a nice heavy hittin short range rifle...but, in the long run, dont know that it would be better than anything already produced in lever guns? i know you can get some hot 45-70 loads..

Re: 500 S&W lever gun??

wildwest makes Marlin levers in a few 50 cals. the 50 alaskan is the 348 opened up to 50 cal. they have been doing this for at least 30 years. I've visited them and shot their products, just great. They are good people and good gunsmiths. A little much for PA deer but probably the best DG gun to carry in Canada or Alaska. they are now making the 50 S&W also.

I tried to get their site to post but it is in construction and not working for me. Just google Wildwestguns.

If I was to spend that money I would definitely upgrade to the Alaskan. I've always wanted that cartridge!!

Just looking at your 400gr. load with the MV @ 1992....if you compare that to the down range energy of the 45-70 shooting the Hornady Lever Revolution bullet (Handloaded) at it's maximum MV of 2,150 and ME of 3,336....you get the following numbers (first is Vel, second is energy):

500 S&W MV 1992

50 yards Vel 1740 Eng. 2689
100 yards Vel 1514 Eng. 2034
200 yards Vel 1165 Eng. 1205
300 yards Vel 980 Eng. 853

45-70 325gr. Hornady Gummy Tip

50 yards Vel 1981 Eng. 2831
100 yards Vel 1820 Eng. 2390
200 yards Vel 1528 Eng. 1684
300 yards Vel 1285 Eng. 1192

So when you compare the two, the 325gr. Hornady in the 45-70 clearly outshines the 400gr. of the 500 S&W. The full effect of the Hornady bullets are not met unless the bullet is loaded at it's maximum as published by Hornady's load data.

FWIW

Re: 500 S&W lever gun??

good stuff!

like my initial thoughts, looks like the 45-70 can outshine the 500 S&W...

those loads were taken off that website and are factory loads out of their carbine barrel..not sure what handloading for the 500 can do...or a rifle length barrel..

i thought i wanted a lever gun once...but went with a whelen pump gun...love the looks and feel if a nice lever gun but cant bring myself to hunt with one..kinda like i love me a Kimber 1911 but cant bring myself to carry a single action pistol..actually had a kimber and traded it for a Sig..lol...just me..

Mauser,I never thought I would ever own anything besides a bolt action. But then I bought my son in law a Marlin 336 in 30-30(he is left eye dominant but right handed due to an injury to his right eye). He had never shot a gun or hunted a day in his life.I wanted a 35 whelen in the worst way and was even gonna have a 270 savage 110 rebarrelled into a whelen. But then after playin around with that 30-30, I decided to check out the Marlin big bore levers as my dedicated bear gun. Had a post on here about which caliber big bore to get. Ended up gettin a Marlin Guide gun in 45/70 and don't regret it a bit. My point is that you don't know till ya give it a try. Someday I will have a 35 whelen, and who knows, maybe I'll even try a pump! which is another rifle I never thought I'd own
