44 magnum

just picked up a jm stamped 1971 marlin model 1894 in 44 magnum, looking to reload for deer and bear. Looking for a scope recommendation as I plan on stretching the range out too 125-150. Also any reloading recommendations? anyone hunt with one?

I have 3 1894.One in 357 and 2 in 44 mag.The one is new 2 me and working on a load. The other 44 mag likes 300gr Hornady XTP.For bear you could try the 265 gr Hornady FP for less expansion and more penetration. They are really shorter range guns And have Leupold 1x4 and 1.5x5 on them.
The newer one I'm trying the 200gr and 240gr Hornady XTP.
5 shots at 50yds.

I've had BEST luck with Hornady bullets which measure .430 instead of typical bullets at .429 diameter. I tried the new Lever-evolution ammo and was amazed at the high degree of accuracy at 100 yards.

I'll be honest I tried the Hornady Lever Rev ammo in my 1894 (44mag) and they shot horrible. Also something to take into consideration is when Marlin changed their rifling in the barrels.

I don't shoot them, but I've heard many good things about the XTP horandy bullets.

I would expect they to shoot differently out of a Ruger M96 (wish I had one of those!)

Thank you, 410. What primer and powder are you using? I was told to try the lighter bullets like the 225 grainers as my friend was getting good groups with the lever revolution bullets. Have u tried shooting that round at 100 yards? looks like 23.-23.5 is the ticket with that bullet.

The hornady 225 ftx show 1255 fps and 5.5 inches of bullet drop at 150 yards that's insane!

I can't help you with reloading but I have a Leupold 2-7x28 rimfire on my 1895 and it works awesome and is a great size for a small lever. Don't be scared of the rimfire label, you can put it on an elephant gun.

I hunted with a .44 mag Win 94 for a number of years. I felt 125 yards was stretching it.
