Savage 340 center fires

What are some of the pro and con of the old Savage 340 rifle... I have one in the 222 and it does shoot well even with factory ammo. I want to play around with it and make it an outstanding fox gun...Heard tell from a reliable predator hunter that the Silvertip 50 grain Ballistic Tips are furfriendly in the 223.. If this bullet can shoot well in the 223 it should also work in the 222 Rem also..

Re: Savage 340 center fires

Funny you should ask. My dad has the very gun. (sav 340 in .222)It absolutely LOVES those ballistic silvertips. I shot the best group of my life with that gun a couple years ago. Five shots under 3/8 of an inch at 100 yds. Had a good friend offer us significantly more than that cheap ol gun was worth. Not sellin! I've yet to own or shoot a savage that wasn't exceptionally accurate, but that one took the cake. Averages groups around 3/4 inch everytime if I do my part. Not bad for a gun with book value around $300 or less, sporter weight barrel, and a cheap scope.

Re: Savage 340 center fires

I'd say a definite con for me with those rifles has been the triggers.

Re: Savage 340 center fires

I have the Stevens model 322 in 22 Hornet which is the same as the 340 I believe. Trigger is good and it's a cool little rifle, butterknife bolt handle. It likes the Winchester 45gr. SP's and the Hornady 35gr. Vmax and thats it. Sat in my FIL's closet for 45 years.

Alrighty then!
