Best deer/varmint caliber

I am going to get a Howa Axiom this year and I am unsure about going with a 308 or 243. It will be used for deer in PA, and yotes Javelina and hogs in Texas. Are 308's versatile with factory ammo for smaller game?

My pick between the two of those would be....NEITHER !.Any time the topic of "top" combination deer/varmint cartridge comes up, you'll get about ten pages of opinions and debate, with the usual winner being the 25/06.Perfect for just about any shot you'll get at a deer, but not ridiculously over-sized for varmints (which any 30 caliber is.)

25-06 isnt offered in the Axiom line though. I have to pick between the two.

Re: Best deer/varmint caliber

If you have never owned a .243 get it!It will flop deer quicker than anything you've shot em with before! It is deadly accurate and with 75 grners look out varmints.Best caliber For Pa no doubt about it!(100grn for deer)

My vote would be for the 25/06 without question..if it wasn't available in a particular gun...I'D CHANGE GUNS rather than cartridge!!! Get yourself the
$300 savage edge or whatever the new name is...save some money and I promise you it will shoot just as good and better than 99% of the factory rifle..

That's my advice as well.

You really under estimated the ramifications of the boondoggle you have just perpetrated!

25.06 in the Marlin XL7. If your sticking with the Axis, .243.
