handi rifle questions

I just acquired a NEF handi rifle sb2 in 280 recently. I dont really know alot about these. I had an encore for a while, swapping barrels was easy. with these, the factory wants you to ship the receiver and whatnot and have them fitted. Is this necessary? And if i did have another barrel fitted, say a 243 or whatever, do i have to send it back to the factory to have the 280 put on again?

Re: handi rifle questions

you won't have to send it back to put the orignal 280 barrel back on.
They will not sell you a barrel unless you ship them the receiver.
But if you do send it for another barrel , then you can swap those barrels back and forth from home.
If you buy a barrel off joe blow from the street , it may fit or it could be too tight or loose.
Too tight is an easier fix at home than too loose.

Re: handi rifle questions

I don't know if with the newer owners of NEF but , you used to be able to request the factory smooth up the trigger in these guns when you sent it in for a barrel fitting , for FREE.
may be worth looking into.
As I said , I don't know if they still do that but never hurts to ask

Re: handi rifle questions

[email protected] used barrels may fit or may not on your action :I have 3 barrel only one barrel would not fit all 3 action.I would say at the factory the underlug was cut back too far.The fix on a loose lock up is to shim the underlug with a steel shim glued in.I also ran into the problem that the barrel will not lock up square to the action so in-return I used a brass shim.001 on the pivit pin . I read .001 on lock up between the barrel and frame is what you are looking for
