Sling mount help

As much as I love to hunt and shoot, I'm not the guy who does much to his own weapons other than clean them. I want to mount a sling on my Marlin 336. I bought thing that attached to the magazine and was assured by the clerk that it was "idiot proof". Not completely true. I removed the bolt from the band holding the barrel to the magazine. I gently tapped the band to slide it off so I could install the clamp from the store. Instead, the entire magazine (and spring) slid out. I have the clamp in place, but can't get the magazine to slide back in far enough now. I don't want to force it. Thoughts?

You may want to check out a schematic of the rifle because sometimes these will give you an idea of what parts go in place in a certain process or order when assembling / disassembling, Perhaps Numrich Gun Parts can help.

I don't know how to fix it but my williams front sling mount didn't require removing the band. It's a 2 part design that has a screw putting both halves together.I would suggest getting a gunsmith involved now if you plan on hunting with it.

I appreciate the replies. I went back to look at it this morning, and everything just slid into place. Could be some alcohol was making it harder than it should have been.....
