Looking to buy a 17HMR

Looking to purchase a 17HMR rifle. Does anybody have any suggestions on what brand. I was looking at the Marlins and Savages. I have a Marlin 22 rifle that shoots well. Also do you guys think a bull barrel is neccesary? Just want it for some closer range hog and fox hunting and plinking. Thanks in advance. I already have a Nikon scope here NIB to put on it.

Re: Looking to buy a 17HMR

I have the Savage heavy barrel. It was a gift back when the 17 came out. Gun shoots great, although its about as a pretty as a fencepost. The Marlins are better finished guns. My Savage had a poorly machined magazine box, but I had it fixed. They are alot of fun to shoot, however in my experience, not great to hunt with. Sometimes it kills a chuck like magic, other times its not so pretty. Shot placement is key for critters bigger than squirrels. Either way you will have a ball with it .

I just ordered one in a Henry Golden Boy, picking it up Friday, I'll let you know how it shoots!
