Re: Winchester mod.71

From the first manufacture of the new M71 in late 1935 through late (September) 1937, the Model 71 was the "long tang, short comb" model. serial number 1 through approx. 12,500. However, some long tangs were made/sold as late as serial number17,000 (approx. 1939) until the parts inventory was used up. The Tang length is: 3 7/8" long.
Post-September, 1937 the Model 71'sshould have the "short tang, long comb" and the tang is 1" shorter, 2 7/8” long.
My understanding was that the Winchester people wanted to strengthen the stock. Figuring the cost of the changes to the forgings, etc Winchester must have been getting a sizable number of complaints/returns for stock cracks.

Re: Winchester mod.71

A very good friend bought a mod 71 in a .348W used 4 shells to sight it in and we went on a Moose hunt in Ontario. he fired one shot and bagged a nice Bull (only one to score) never used the gun again - still had the original box on ammo - when he passed away I tried every thing I could think of to aquire the gun - no avail - His widow gave it to her son (his stepson) and he doesn't even hunt. It was the most prestine gun I ever saw..compared to the ones I see at gunshows now..Hindsight!!

Re: Winchester mod.71

They are true works of machining art. The best lever winchester ever made. They were only made in 348 winchester. and the 71 is the only rifle made in 348 winchester...a matched pair.LOL

Mine is 95% like new.

I think of converting it to a 50 Alaskan (a 348 blown out to an AI body and 50 cal. Awsome. But will never do it, as it would ruin the antique nature of the 71. If I ever see the repo Browning m71, I might do it to that japanesse made clone.
