whelen carbine report

tried out my new gun this afternoon. its a remington model 7600 factory carbine in 35 whelen. i put tally low one peice mounts on it and a cheapo bushnell 3-9x40 for now until the gun budget allows a better scope. i will probably put either a bushnell 2-7x32 elite 3200 or nikon monarch 1.5-4.5x20. i want something small that fits the gun. it is going to be a PA mountain deer gun and where i hunt a long shot is 75 yards. but i couldn't wait to shoot this since i got it a couple weeks ago. i ordered some shells from wisconson cartridge company. they are 200 grain PSP's going at 2700 fps. i want to try to find the two remington corelokt factory loads to try as well. anyway heres the pics.

it was about 15 degrees and windy so this isn't all that impressive for a 4 shot 40 yard group but it's MOV. plus the trigger is the typical 7600 which seems about 10lbs. i need to get that lightened up too.

i like it. it carries, swings and points really nice. it belts you pretty good though. off the bags it almost ejects the spent shell itself. i think once i pull the trigger group and put some good lube on the slide rail grooves its going to be ejecting the shells it itself.

i love these 35's. it goes well with my 35 rems and 350 rem mag. now i need a 358 to finish out the trifecta.

Great report, I can't wait to get my hands on a Whelen carbine myself.

That'll be a sweet little rig once you get a slightly smaller scope on it.

I'd personally be inclined to run 225 grain Partitions through it and rule the world!

ya very limited run. they are a non-cataloged gun. i've never seen another first hand and i been collecting rem pumps for years. i know of 2 others in canada and one in missouri. i also know of a synthetic version belonging to the same guy in canada. i had heard that they were made for the Shot Shows as a promotional sort of thing. i also heard that they were made for export to europe where the whelen is popular. all speculation at this point. i am trying to do some research to find out more info. i found this one in a little country gun shop in western PA compliments of a tip from a fellow HPA'er for whom i will gladly buy many, many beers.

Re: whelen carbine report

A great combination of rifle and cartridge. Good luck with it.

BTW a friend had a 760 rebarreled by Paul Jaeger 40 years ago and I always thought it was a great combo for PA and ME.
