.30-06 and .308 Win?

I have both in bolt action. I don't reload. They are about equally accurate. My question is, is there any significant difference between the performance of these two cartridges in factory ammo?

I have killed 7 bucks with my 30-06 but was just give a 308 in stainless. As a result, I think my 30-06 is going to sit in the safe. If there is nothing that the 30-06 can do appreciably better, I might get tid of it in favor of a 7mm mag or 300 wsm.

Once you get above 165 grain case capacity wins the race

Re: .30-06 and .308 Win?

There is no critter that will know the difference between an 06 and a .308.

Maybe depending on the load your giving up 100 to 150 fps.

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

No animal will ever know the difference, the only difference you would ever notice maybe is the short action....despite what others may say..can't beat .308 holes in game !!

Re: .30-06 and .308 Win?

As "RobOz" said, the '06 wins with the heavier bullets due to the much longer casing that can accommodate the longer .30 cal bullets. So anything 168 or heavier is where the .30-06 shines. With 150's, they're comparable. The .308 is usually always 150 fps or so behind the '06 with any given weight.

Re: .30-06 and .308 Win?

Using Logic, the .308 was designed to be fired in a short action military rifle.
It was designed to replace the 30-06, because a soldier could carry more ammo if the ammo was smaller.
If comparing 150 gr bullets / rounds, the .308 is about 150 fps. slower than the '06.
The .308 is not designed to shoot 165 or 180 gr bullets.
To get the velocity, Winchester designed the .308 to use a different powder than the IMR 4350. Although you can use either the 4350 or 4320 if you had to!

Dad used IMR 3031 - but you could also use 4064, but you can't trick it to shoot heavier bullets and retain accuracy - the same as a 30-06 Springfield.

You didn't say what you wished to hunt with it.
Deer - 150 gr is all the bullet you need!
Bear - I wouldn't mind using something a little heavier - especially if the hunter was inexperienced.

My .300 Winchester Magnum and 180 gr Sierra's is more suitable for hunting bear then my 30-06, although both will do the same job. Just that I won't have to sight my .300 Winchester Magnum in twice to use it for both seasons.

The old saying - you have to dance with who brung you - is oh so true when it comes to hunting bears.

Re: .30-06 and .308 Win?

I bought 165 grain ammo for the .308 and the accuracy was good at 100 yards. I guess I'll hang on to the 30-06 in case I go moose or elk hunting. I'd probably use a solid copper 180 grain bullets for that.

Re: .30-06 and .308 Win?

There's not enough difference in these two cartridges to merit discussion. Any bullet weight from 150 - 180 grains will do fine in a .308. It is an inherently accurate round.
Above 180 grains in a .30-06 you can definitely wring more velocity out of it than the .308. But I've always thought that if you're using 220 grain bullets and such in an '06, then you should be thinking about a bigger cartridge anyway so it is a moot argument to me.
That being said, I have three .30-06's and no .308's.

As a devoted 30/06 user I cast my vote for it over the .308 mostly because of old-times-sake. However, the switch from the 06 M-1 round to the 7.62 NATO (Winchester 308) for the M-14 left nothing to be desired. The .308 is a great round: powerful, accurate with not much recoil.

Re: .30-06 and .308 Win?

308 Win = dead deer and bears....... same as the '06. Only deciding factor when choosing between the two would be which one YOU like better. Critters won't know the difference.
