Your idea of a true whitetail cartridge?

I don't mean a combination cartridge or an all around cartridge but one that is tailored to the whitetailed deer. For me it's the .243 Win, 6mm Rem, .250 Savage, .257 Roberts, and .260 Rem that fit my idea of a deer cartridge.

Re: Your idea of a true whitetail cartridge?

I place them into two categories:.....Woods guns and field guns since I have the luxury of hunting either type of terrain.......For my woods hunting I use the 358 Winchester, 45-70, 444 Marlin, or 350 Remington Magnum.

For my field shooting I use the 270, 7mm magnum, 8 mm Magnum, or 25-06.

If I were forced to forsake all of them and be resigned to just one, it would be my Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08.

I like the 257 Roberts and I've most recently killed a deer with a 7mm-08.

Any cartridge that is accurate and carries at least 1000 ft/lbs to 400 yards.

Re: Your idea of a true whitetail cartridge?

I have used the 35 rem., 350 rem mag,.308 win.,6mm rem.,6.5 rem mag., 264 win mag. and I can honestly say there isn't a dimes worth of difference between them. This year I am going to try the .223 with barnes bullets.

One cartridge for all conditions on whitetail deer. Either the 7mm/08 Rem. or 308 Win.
