For PA hunting, I sight in right on at 100. I don't hunt anywhere that I can shoot much further than that anyway.
Out west or elsewhere, I sight in for right on at 200 yards. Whatever it is at 100 yards doesn't matter. ! 1/2, 2 inch whatever. Just shoot. I then shoot at 300 to see where it hits. If I can help it at all, I don't shoot past 300 yards.
I agree with a 100yd zero. Most of my shots here are 100yds and even with my 300winmag at 200 Id be 1-1.5 in low which is still in the kill zone of a big game animal. In Ga when I hog hunt I use a 308 with adj turrets out to 300 and have a 100yd zero for when I use my clip on night vision since I shoot under 100 at night.
That's a good rule of thumb for most modern cartridges that have velocities from 2700fps up. If I sight in and am between 1-2" high at 100, I'm good. It's close for a dead on hold out to 250 yards with my .243, 7mm-08, .308 and .30-06-and I won't shoot at a deer further than that.
