Re: 2 inches high at 100 ?

Each load is different... without shooting at known ranges the charts and wives tales are just a ball park...

If you sight in a 45/70 2" high at 100yds and a 300 win mag 2" high at 100yds there is certainly gunna be a difference between the two impacts at 200yds...

Without shooting it's just a guess...with some shooting you can make a pretty educated guess though.....

Re: 2 inches high at 100 ?

For PA hunting, I sight in right on at 100. I don't hunt anywhere that I can shoot much further than that anyway.

Out west or elsewhere, I sight in for right on at 200 yards. Whatever it is at 100 yards doesn't matter. ! 1/2, 2 inch whatever. Just shoot. I then shoot at 300 to see where it hits. If I can help it at all, I don't shoot past 300 yards.

I agree with a 100yd zero. Most of my shots here are 100yds and even with my 300winmag at 200 Id be 1-1.5 in low which is still in the kill zone of a big game animal. In Ga when I hog hunt I use a 308 with adj turrets out to 300 and have a 100yd zero for when I use my clip on night vision since I shoot under 100 at night.

I like Jack O'Connor's system of 3" high at 100 yards to get the most out of your maximum point blank range.

Re: 2 inches high at 100 ?

that's plausible ball park figuring.
there's a lot of small variances that can put it +or- 1"

firstly the gun can shoot -1" at 100yd zero
with my scope height and 180g rds my .06 needs 1.5" at 100 to hit a 2" target at 200yds.

another way of phrasing it would be to say if I held zero at 200ys my POI would be 1.5 low

Deer that be alright.. The 2 or 3 inch high thing... Hunting predators I now have it right on at 100 yards.. I missed to many coyotes and fox playing the 2 inch high game at night time..

Re: 2 inches high at 100 ?

That's a good rule of thumb for most modern cartridges that have velocities from 2700fps up. If I sight in and am between 1-2" high at 100, I'm good. It's close for a dead on hold out to 250 yards with my .243, 7mm-08, .308 and .30-06-and I won't shoot at a deer further than that.
