Cutting a 22'' 760 barrel down to 20''?

I got a 760 30-06 with some pitting and damage from bad cleaning so i'm going to get it cut back to good barrel and crowned. I might just go to 20" and split the difference of a carbine since this would be woods/drive gun. Has anyone done this and how did you like it?

Do it! I had two identical 760s, so I modified the beater for the same reason you are considering. I had the barrel cut back to 20" with a recessed crown. The smith redrilled holes and put the front sight on. I also had the warped end of the buttstock removed, and had a recoil pad installed. I have a low fixed power scope with removable rings. It carried like a little marlin 336, with the punch of a 30.06. It has a great feel. Good luck.

No way...it's not worth the expense of cutting and recrowning, doesn't make sense..how much different can it handle...you might be able to find a take off carbine barrel cheaper

I'd do it. I have a Husqvarna aught-six with a 20" barrel and it's perfect!

Cut and crown should not run over a hundred bucks. I think its a great idea.

Thank's guys, i already have it tore down ready to go next week. I have a limbsaver recoil pad on the way so we think alike DVD!The cut and crown is under a hundred and needs done regardless so might as well go 20" since it would close to 21" to fix the issues.

reds that is shorter than i want, i have heard a lot of good things about the carbine except muzzle blast. I figure the 20" being in between the two would be about perfect for what i will be using it for.

There's a world of difference in the muzzle blast between a 16" .35 Rem and a .30-06 that short.
