So I'm in the market for a big game gun I can take out west and I looked at the tikka but I really like the weatherby vanguard synthetic stock and stainless steel barrel. So the question is do I get it in the weatherby mag or the win mag? I know the weatherby ammo is not cheap but is there a big difference between the two?
Tikka rifles are in a class of their own. From what I have been seeing on the range lately, it is the most accurate factory rifle out there. The 300 Win.Mag has over twice the selection of factory rounds and is cheaper and easier to get.....and you know finding ammo and components has not really improved.
Availability of ammo is much greater for the Win Mag and the cost is less. But if you look.....and not too hard.......you can find factory Weatherby ammo for under $40/box. But you likely won't find it in Walmart.
The net gain by going 300 Weatherby over 300 Win Mag is pretty close the same gain as going 300 Win Mag over 30-06.
All the Weatherby chamberings are for folks who reload or have some extra spending cash for ammo. I shoot a Weatherby round that runs from $120 on up for a box of 20 factory cartridges. I did some smart shopping for components and can load a box of my own for less than 1/4 of that.
I have both Weatherby and Win Mag in Model 70 rifles. They are basically twins. Recoil-wise one is not greatly or noticeably more than the other.
