Can anyone give me recommendations on a gun case for airline traveling for a hunt in Wyoming next fall?

Depends on what you want to spend, if it were me I would look into the Pelican cases. They are virtually bullet-proof and will give your gun maximum protection.

Send it out by UPS a week before you fly. I wouldnt trust an airline and they will upcharge you to send extra baggage. It is cheaper to send it UPS. I would send all your gear that way and travel only with you carry on bag. Pelican cases are best.

I always take two rifles, locked in an aluminum case. It has two wheels on bottom and a handle at top. Makes it easy to move around.

With what airlines are charging today, it would probably be better to ship it ahead to a FFL near your hunting site.

Re: gun case recommnedation

My Pelican case has seen many air miles without fail.

You want a case that has padlocks....A favorite of non-gun loving baggage handlers is to unlock those suitcase type locks then call security for an unlocked case...you get to the destination and your rifle is back at the airport.

There is some legal wrangling shipping a firearm...think you have to ship it to yourself "in care of someone" or somthing to that effect.

Gun case will be 1pc of luggage.....gear will be the second bag (50lb max).

Southwest Air still gives 2 bags free but it is tough to pack gear to the weight limit.

NOTE: Triple check the pockets on anything you stuff into your carry-on.

Re: gun case recommnedation

First check to see what your airlines considers the maximum diemension. This is actually not the length but the diagonal. If to large, it flies but with a 2nd sur-charge and must come out the OVERSIZE Baggage area (away from you often).

I have a doouble SKB hard case. Many trips to alaska africa etc. perfect.

If you get a hard case, for more than one rifle, be SURE to get one with wheels. With the addition of a few bungies, it works as a baggage cart, great for getting thru custom lines, etc

Re: gun case recommnedation

I have the Cabelas aluminum two gun case with wheels. Very good product. I pack two guns, optics, shooting stick etc within the case. Fly Southwest and it is my second piece of baggage. Cooler going out gets filled with clothes, coming back filled with meat (if lucky)and clothes get shipped UPS.
My buddy's got caughtin the carousel and it shut the thing down. Case was damaged to the point where it needed to be replaced but the equipment inside was perfect. That was enough to convince me. After seeing the case I am not sure a plastic case would have held up

I have a plastic, my hunting partner has a wheeled aluminim (from Cabelas) his does get caught on the conveyors and turntables. Mine has more rounded curved corners and seems to go thru smoother. Actually, air cargo doors are more danger.
