.357 mag rifle for deer/similar sized game

anyone here use a .357 mag rifle for deer? (brush gun obviously).

I was thinking about getting one for the fun factor (puma, rossi, or marlin) but i'm a bit hesitant for using it as a deer rifle.

Re: .357 mag rifle for deer/similar sized game

A friend at work has one. His son uses it for the MY program and has no problem killing deer with it. No problem with shots out to 100 yards. Beyond that I'm not sure as that is as far has he will allow his son to take a shot.

We all make choices, some good, some bad, can you live up to yours?

everyone I know that uses one swears by it. no recoil, alot of ammo, cheap ammo (comparatively) and well...just the cool factor of having a rifle and handgun in the same caliber.

Re: .357 mag rifle for deer/similar sized game

The reason i was hesitant on using it for deer was the numbers. At the muzzle (18 inch barrel), hornady lists the energy at around 1064, and at 100 yards its just about 500 ft-pounds (357 Mag 140 gr FTX LEVERevolution). Now i know energy isnt everything but 500 ft-lbs from a middle weight bullet doesn't seem like the trick with a sectional density of .157

Try using 180 grain (heavy for caliber) bullets. Killed about 5 or 6 bucks/does in the past including a large Doe in WV this year. Minimal kick, plenty of power, etc.

I've killed them with a 357 revolver, I'm sure a rifle would kill them pretty good too.
