30 caliber bullet penetration

What do you think... if you have the same 180 grain .308 expanding bullet fired from similar 24" barrels with the same twist rate at approximate typical velocities for a 308 Winchester and from a 300 Remington Ultra Magnum, somewhere around 2700fps for the 308 and somewhere around 3300fps for the 300. Given the exact same hit on an animal from 0-300 yards, which will have deeper penetration, the 308 Win or the 300 RUM?

Good luck, Tony

Re: 30 caliber bullet penetration

As straight forward as it reads, no tricks whatsoever!

What penetrates more with any expanding bullet, a 308 or a 300 mag?

Re: 30 caliber bullet penetration

I'm guessing the 308...slower bullet=less expansion=deeper penetration.....?!?!?

Re: 30 caliber bullet penetration

They did tests on this and in some cases the 308 went deeper.

Re: 30 caliber bullet penetration

If its a standard cup and core bullet, its the 308. Way to much energy out of the 300 mag for the bullet to retain its shape and weight to penetrate as deep.

Along the same lines, one could ask which will penetrate the greater depth of water, 9mm or 30-06?

Re: 30 caliber bullet penetration

Well, if it's a nosler ballistic tip, I give the nod to the 308, becasue theoretically, more bullet would remain intact. If it's a barnes tsx, the 300 will penetrate more. I think "expanding" bullet is too braod of a scope. Pick the specific brand/type of bullet and then ask the question, That would be ba more fair assessment in my opinion

I think I'm an alright guy, I think I'm alright

Completey different issue, different calibers, different weights, different velocities, any 2 dissimilar things can be discussed. Lets stick with same weight, same construction, same caliber, only the velocity is different.
