Ruger Mark III hammer strut problem

So, I decided to sit down and teach myself how to disassemble and reassemble my Mark III this evening. Disassembling wasn't too bad. Got everything nice and clean and started in on the reassembly instructions.

Right off the bat we've got a problem. The hammer won't go down. The book says the hammer strut might be stuck behind the cross pin so I look, and boy is it ever. More than that, it looks like it bent the cross pin. The instructions say to lift the hammer to free it, but that sucker won't budge. Anybody have any ideas?

Pull the trigger and see if that allows the hammer to move forward or remove the grips and take the bent pin out, get a new pin while youre at it.

Re: Ruger Mark III hammer strut problem

The gunsmith at my local shop was able to manually reset the hammer. After that the rest of the reassembly was no trouble. I've read that some have taken to just removing the grips and taking carb cleaner to the gun to avoid disassembly. I understand the appeal of that approach.

Re: Ruger Mark III hammer strut problem

It is a darn nice gun to shoot, though. And it does digest just about any cheap .22 ammo I've fed it. The one exception is truncated HPs; the nose gets boogered up on the loading ramp, which is unfortunate since that's what I have the most of.
