458 Win. Mag. followed me home today

Just got home from the local gun show and came home with a 458 Win Mag. It is built on a 98 action and has peep sights. Has anyone shot this cal. before? Anything good or bad about this round? I have been thinking about one for a few years but never shot one.

If anyone has a good load to try please let me know, I will be reloading for it due to the price of factory ammo.

I have never owned one but have shot several. Very fun rifle.......and in a mauser! Great score. I have only shot full power african loads. 500 grain bullets. But I know you can reload to 45-70 levels for deer hunting with lighter bullets.

If you don't mind sharing the information what did it run you cost wise? We need to see pictures

Re: 458 Win. Mag. followed me home today

I got it for $350. He was a private seller so there was no tax or background check to add to the price. I will see if I can figure out how to post pics. I will have to start tracking down reloading supplies so I can shoot it. I want to try the full power loads just to say I did but will most likely download it like you said to near the 45-70 level. I love getting a new cal. to play with!

Anything good or bad about this round?

It will kill anything on the planet.

Ammo is expensive and the recoil is substantial.

I bet loading it to 45-70 ballistics will make it very pleasant to shoot, since it's probably much heavier than most 45-70 chambered rifles.

Congrats on your new toy.

I used to have one in a ruger m77 rs. For lighter loads try 350 gr. hornady bullets. Fun caliber.

Re: 458 Win. Mag. followed me home today

I've had a .458 for over 20 years and very much enjoy the rifle and cartridge although it isn't for everyone. I personally do not find the recoil excessive but I do find the weapon a kick in the fanny to shoot. The only time it was deployed on game was a large wild Hog in Florida and it was very impressive in that situation. Federal also makes a 300 grain soft point which would probable be an interesting bear load here in Pa.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Do any of you have a "pet" handload that you like? Like I stated before I plan on reloading for it after getting some factory rounds for the brass.

MidwayUSA has Hornady brass for $62 per 50 . Might be cheaper than what you'd pay for a box of 20 factory shells. Also a lot of reloading info here:

Don't own one. But have run a couple for extended sessions a time or two. It is a GREAT old caliber !!! You have the ability to dial in whatever power level you wish. And even at full .458 Mag throttle, the recoil is pretty darned tolerable if you use good form.

I'd just wind 'er up and let 'er go, though !!! If you want .45-70 numbers you buy a .45-70.
