22-250 barrel, shot out???

I just picked up a used Mauser this weekend. While I examined it the best I could before I bought it I did not think the rifling was that bad. Well, after two nights of scrubbing hoping it was copper fouling, I've basically decided it must be most of the way shot out. There is very light rifling at the muzzle and it does not look that crisp the rest of the way down the barrel. I tried the trick of placing a projectile in the muzzle and it stops at the ogive. There isn't any pitting or erosion, just the rifling looks smoothed over about an inch or so in from the muzzle.

I guess my question is how bad can the rifling be before it won't shoot worth a darn? And if it is shot out who should I take it to? Or is it possible to get it reamed out for another caliber? The only thing I have going for me there is it's a varmint barrel, so there is a lot of meat to work with. I was looking at the Shaw barrels online thinking that might be my only way to go if this thing won't group.

Remember, shoot straight and shoot often.

The only way to know for sure is to have it borescoped. I would try a nylon brush smeared with JB paste first. Scrub it thru barrel about 25 times then do a normal cleaning. Have you tried to shoot it as is?

I dont think anyone can accurately tell you if its done until its been shot. I have seen some ugly bores on brand new barrels that gave acceptable accuracy.

From your description it doesnt sounds like the bore is shot out. A barrel will get burned out right in front of the chamber from alot of rounds, since you said there is not erosion I think that will not be your problem. My guess is that since the bore shows the most damage at the muzzle its just because someone was rubbing the bore at that spot with a cleaning rod.

If the barrel is only damaged at the muzzle end it can be cut back and recrowned. There are also companies that will rebore and rechamber barrels. Another option is a complete rebarrel.

Good luck, Tony

You do not know if there is a problem. Shoot it and find out what you have.

I know Martin well. I grew up about a mile away from his farm. I was going to stop over tonight and talk to him.

With the amount of snow we got here last month it's been hard to get to the range, let alone try to shoot. I was just out there last weekend and there was a truck stuck in the driveway. No they don't plow during the winter. Even if I could get out there didn't feel like trudging through waist deep snow.

It just has me worried. Knowing the caliber, and what it can do to a barrel, to have a 40-50??? year old gun that looks like it does... This thing is teaching me all sorts of lessons. Like don't buy a gun for the gun. It was just too pretty with the carved Fajen stock, K12 Weaver and the double set triggers.

If it's shot out, then think about a new barrel. Heck, you might take it to the range and be pleasantly surprised.

Re: 22-250 barrel, shot out???

It's official, I'm a worry wart.

Under normal circumstances I wouldn't consider this a success, but conditions today weren't great. All the good seats at the range were gone, there was a stiff cross wind, I was cold and for some reason the set trigger wasn't working right in the cold. All three brands of ammo that I tried grouped about the same, around 2" at 100yrds. Again, not great, but I was jerking a lot with the heavy pull on that main trigger. Thanks again guys for the help, or at least the moral support.
