HELP - ID Grade Ithaca NID SXS 16 Ga Pic Hvy

Bought this shotgun at auction a while back.

A Ithaca Field Grade NID 16 ga SxS manufactured in 1928.

Overall it is in 70 - 80 percent condition.

My problem is, there are like 7 "E" grades for this shotguns, and I can not find a detail on how to distinguish one from another.

Second to last picture - stamped with what looks like a 3 or M

The S appears on the forearm metal and on the breech lug.

The issue is, there are 7 E grades of this shotgun. Trying to figure out what I have. From research, I am sure it is grade 4 or lower.

Thanks in advance.

Has an extractor. Not an ejector.

Has the white double beads on the barrel rib.

Barrels perfect.

The grade is suppose to be near the barrel choke designation - but isn't on this one.

Also curious as to the stamps that are hard to make out on the barrels just forward of the choke designation.

Thanks in advance.

Re: HELP - ID Grade Ithaca NID SXS 16 Ga Pic Hvy

I believe that is a standard field grade or a special.either way they are the lowest grade.
I'm way more familiar with the m37s but I have accidently learned a bit about their doubles.
probably just enough to get me in trouble...

I believe its like this ,
the specials were basically upgraded barrels over the standard field grade.in some years or at some point the specials replaced the field grades altogether.
the engraved stars at the time I believe were added as a tribute to the WW1 vets.

I think during the years we are talking about Ithaca offered the special ,a victory model then grades 4 and up.
the victory grade had a fine border scroll engraving .when you get into the 4s and up there is extensive receiver engraving as well as beaver tail for ends and increased checkering

that is good news if you want to use it

That is a basic field grade gun.

Grade 1E?

As I said, looking to crack the nut on what makes something one grade over another. Interested in value, but also looking to learn as well.

Re: HELP - ID Grade Ithaca NID SXS 16 Ga Pic Hvy

no not a 1E ,just field grade
with Ithaca the E means ejector ,with E guns when you break it open the shells are flung out of the barrels.
the field guns had extractors.
what separates the gun grade 1-7 and sousa grades
is simply the detail in checkering on the wood and receiver engravings as well as precious metals.
1s had upgraded barrels nicer checkering
2-3 had slightly more checkering and a bit more engraving and beavertail forend options

4's lack full receiver engravings , had fleur de lis checkering on grip but no checkering on the stock cheeks and no barrel engravings, no gold

heres a 5E

theres 75% receiver engraving, a gold pheasant, checkered stock cheeks ,more extensive fleur de lis , but no barrel engraving.

7E

full engraving ,light barrel engraving, gold ducks, fleur de lis on stock cheeks and extended off grip

as you go though each grade the design of the receiver engraving as well as the scene also changes along with the fleur de lis checkering getting more extensive
