Sights for 45-70

Hello everyone. I just picked up a Marlin 45-70. My use for this gun will be PA black bear hunting. I was using a 30-06 pump, but I am worried that some of the bear i have seen in the area I hunt might be lost - I wanted more power.

The scope has been taken off the gun, as I envision shooting no more than 100 yards. My set ups are close to travel routes and on the edge of the thickets. I want to shoot open sights. I dont like the sights that are on there now - they are the original sights. I find them to be a challenge to pickup especially in low light conditions.

You folks that hunt open sights - what type of sights have you put on your gun? i see there a number of sights available just curious to hear others input. thanks for reading and thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Sights for 45-70

I have a XS rear ghost ring sight combined with a Williams Firesight (red fiber optic) front sight. If you prefer a more traditional front sight, the XS one is just a white post.

I have my Marlin setup with a 2-8X Weaver scope, with Warne Maxima quick detach rings, for normal use and load development. The above mentioned open sights are for days in the brush, and inclement weather. Just something to consider.

Check out Skinner sights. They've got different peep options like XS, but seem to "fit" better on lever guns. I'm toying with putting a Burris Fastfire III on my guide gun. Good luck!

Be good, and you will be lonesome.
