What gun and load do you use when you hunt?

I want to start getting into hunting. I want to hunt everything from squirrel to deer but I don't know which weapon is the best for each scenario. For instance, say I use a 150gr. 30-30 bullet for deer, I use a 30-06 150gr for deer, I use a ... for squirrel, pheasant, turkey, etc.

get yourself a Mossberg 500 12 gauge combo. I could sell every gun I have except for that one, and still hunt every game animal pa has to offer.

I've made that statement a couple times now. Hope my wife never reads that statement......

Hunt/fish is right about the Mossberg 500. I have one in 20 guage and can hunt about anything with it.
However, if you have a few extra bucks and an understanding wife, buy as many guns as you can....they're alot of fun....

for squirrel, is a 22 long rifle or a shotgun with fine shot..usually 5 or 6..

for rabbit, grouse, pheasant etc its a shotgun..loads vary depending on cover and how they are holding..close shots i use a smaller shot and more open choke..farther shots i tighten the choke and shot gets bigger..

for deer i use a 308 or 3006 with 165gr bullets

for bear i use a 35 whelen with 225gr bullets

for turkey i use a shotgun with 4, 5 or 6 shot heavy turkey loads..

for groundhogs i shoot a 22-250 with 45-55gr bullets

everyone has different guns and calibers and loads they like...nothing is really set in stone..

Is there a big difference between the 500 and the 870? Because my friend has two Remington 870's he is trying to sell. One is "regular" and the other one is a "magnum". He wants the same price for both of them so which one would be better?

And it all comes down to personal preference. They're both good guns.

Re: What gun and load do you use when you hunt?

The reason I meantioned the 500 was because they are normally on sale this time of year for about $300 for the combo with a cheapo scope. The remington usually goes for around $400 with iron sights.

I like the combo because you get a fully rifled slug barrel as well as the field barrel. Sure you could throw sluggers from any field barrel, but the bead sight leaves something to be desired.

Try to buy the slug barrel seperately, and you will pay close to the price of some combos.
