Smith Corona 03-A3

Hey guys, just curious if anyone could give me some direction on a potential purchase. I thinking about buying the gun mentioned in the subject line of this post. Unfortunately, it's been sporterized but is in pretty good shape overall. I've attached some pics, and if possible, I would like to know the max amount of money you would pay for this weapon. Additionally, if I buy this gun, do I keep it as is, or am I better off making further upgrades (potentially a Boyd's stock) to basically make it another hunting rifle.

Thanks,

Barrel was made in Sept 1943 but based on serial number is was assembled in 1944

There are no other stamps on the stock that I can see other than this one

It appears to be a Remington bolt based on the "R" stamped to the lest of the handle

Re: Smith Corona 03-A3

Typical rebuilt 03A3. Since the stock has been bubba'ed, I'd say $300 max, assuming the bore is good and all else is in safe working order. I'd personally be trying to get it for $200-$250. Such a gun in a full military stock will fetch maybe $600. Maybe.

It's easy to restore it to military configuration, as you'll only need a military stock, handguard, and bands/stock metal. Depending on how nice a stock you want, you can do this for probably $200 up to as much as you want to spend.

If you want this to hunt, bear in mind there is work that has to happen if you want a scope on it. That work is not free in most cases, so budget a couple hundred to get that all sorted out (stuff like bending the bolt handle so it'll clear a scope, replacing the safety so it's scope-friendly, removing the rear sight, machining off the rear sight base, and drilling/tapping for mounts).

He said I can just give him $100- he initially said $50 so I may see if he will close the deal at $75

Smith Corona is quite desirable by collectors.

$100.00???? Wow, what a steal!!! You can set a stock for probably about another $100.00 or so.

Re: Smith Corona 03-A3

Have barrel condition and head space checked.

This rifle, sporterized is my primary big game rifle. Tough as nails, and highly accurate.

Is your position a short term gain - or a long term loss? Separate the issues.
