OK. Have you tried the safety with the rifle's striker/pin c0cked? The safety won't go out of the fire position with the striker released like that.

it was my fathers rifle sooner not mess with it would rather have someone with more knowledge look at it

This is an easy thing to do.

Lift the bolt handle all the way up. Cycle the bolt if you want, just be sure it's not loaded.

Close the bolt fully.

Now try the safety.
