Re: Old 30-06 Military Cases

my dad and grandpa handloaded old military brass for years. they might be worth something to somone. but not a goldmine.i think the cases are swaged after the primer is put in. this makes it hard to handload them. the "swage"needs to be removed before the old used primer can be pushed out by reloading die. i think.

Re: Old 30-06 Military Cases

Probably not much? Most of the 30-06 brass I once reformed into 25-06 cases years ago, were Lake City stuff someone gave me. Most of it was from the mid-50s. Some were headstamped LC Match.

Re: Old 30-06 Military Cases

Lack City Brass is thicker then regular factor loads, which means that you can't put as much powder into them as you could a Federal or a Remington or a Winchester.
The smaller the case the higher the chamber pressure.

The primers are swaged and you have to ream the primer pocket with a reamer before you can insert the primer or use one of these.

The problem is - that you will break a lot of primer decap pins when you run them through the die the first time with regular dies.
Lack City was good brass, during the wars - they were also loaded by Remington (E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company) for Lake City arsenal.

Re: Old 30-06 Military Cases

I'm loading LC68 that I got 40 yr ago. Only got about 5 loads on them but they were free and I have loaded them up to max. in the Lyman book and no excessive pressure signs. Your mileage may vary. Broke some decapping pins because the flash holes weren't centered. Then swaged the primer pockets w/ a Herters swaging tool. No affect on accuracy. Got 5/16" 3 shot cloverleaves at 100 yd with a 1968 M70 in '06. 1" in an '06 Pa. Machine Gun w/a different load which I lucked into because I didn't work it up,I just threw it together and that's what I got. Both w/3x9 Leupold scopes.Yes, they are heavier than commercial brass but it's no problem for me.No extra value to them unless you find a fool that thinks he needs them.I try to find them after I shoot a deer but I don't get carried away.

Guns don't kill. Husbands that come home early do!

A mess of 'em now, but they're all 5.56 LC cases.

Got rid of my old 06 brass years ago, most of it had outlived its usefulness.

About the time that old brass had gotten close to the end of the road, is when I started looking after our club's ranges and began to collect lots of once-fired factory 06 brass. Still have some 20 round boxes of that stuff in the cupboard. Mostly R-P, some Federal.

I'll look around to see if any old LC 06 cases survived the purge, but I doubt there are any left?

Re: Old 30-06 Military Cases

I was hoping you had 200 or 300 of one headstamp. I do not mix headstamps, and I need at least 200. Thanks, Tom.
